The Central Line of the Bible – The Triune God! Our God is One yet Three, He is Triune!

These days we’re enjoying the Central Line of the Bible – the central line of the divine revelation in the Holy Scriptures.

Yesterday we saw that the first item in the Central Line of the Bible is the Word of God – the expression, definition, and explanation of God. Today we are enjoying the second item, which is the Triune God! God is the beginning of the Bible (Gen. 1:1, In the beginning GOD created…) and He is the beginning of all things!

He “started all this”, and He is the origin of everything / everyone that exists! As such, our God is One! Yet the Bible also clearly reveals that God is Three: the Father, the Son, and the Spirit. This is what puzzles most believers and unbelievers alike: how many Gods are there, is it ONE or is it THREE?

Many good Christians strongly believe in three distinct Gods, while others are kind of confused about it. Indeed, as human beings created by God, it is impossible for us to understand God. As Martin Luther once said, “If you were to understand the Triune God – you must be God!”

Though we cannot fully understand God, we can at least see what the Bible says about God – and we believe what the Bible, confirmed by our experience and enjoyment, says! Here are some main points / items related to our wonderful Triune God:

  • Our God is self-existing and ever-existing (Exo. 3:14) – He is the I AM, the verb to BE, and He does not need anything or anyone to support, sustain, or help Him in His existence! God simply IS!
  • Our God is eternally ONE GOD – our God is eternally and forever ONE (1 Cor. 8:4; Isa. 45:5; Psa. 86:10). There is only ONE God, there are no three or more Gods – only One! And God’s first attribute is ONENESS. One God!
  • Our God is eternally three – the Father, the Son, and the Spirit! Our God is the Triune God! The Father is eternal (Isa. 9:6), the Son is eternal (Heb. 1:2; 7:3), and the Spirit is eternal (Heb. 9:14). On the one hand, our God is one; on the other hand, He has the aspect of three. One yet three – the Triune God!
  • The three in the Godhead coexist simultaneously – the Father, the Son, and the Spirit are not “three stages of God”, rather, they co-exist at the same time (John 14:16-17; Eph. 3:14-17; 2 Cor. 13:14). Where the Father is, there is also the Son and the Spirit.
  • The three in the Godhead coinhere – they mutually indwell one another! This is a concept hard to grasp since we as human beings can co-exist but cannot indwell one another. But in John 14:10-11 the Lord clearly says, “Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me?… Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me…”
  • Among the Three of the Divine Trinity, there is distinction but no separation – yes, the Father / the Son / the Spirit each have a particular function, but when each one of them does something they don’t do it in and by themselves but together with one another! This is the beauty of it: The Three in the Godhead are distinct but not separate! In their coexistence the three of the Godhead are distinct, but their coinherence makes them one! Distinct – but not separate!

Praise the Lord for such a wonderful Triune God! “Why is God so complicated?  Why do we need to know all these things?” many people ask. The main reason for God being One yet Three – the reason for God being Triune is that He might dispense Himself into us to be our life and everything!

Our God is the Father, the Son, and the Spirit so that He may reach man, enter into man, be everything to man, transform man, and make man His dwelling place, His habitation! Praise the Lord – today we don’t need to be hindered by doctrinal knowledge or the attempt to understand the Triune God – we just need to enjoy Him and experience Him! Enjoy the dispensing of the Triune God today!
