Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth (Matt. 5:5); those who are poor in spirit and who mourn over the pitiful situation today are meek, willing to give in, not fighting back, but meek toward other people while fighting against Satan and his evil power.
Lord Jesus, make us those who are meek. We open to You. You are the meek One in our spirit. May we be emptied continually in our spirit so that we may be filled with You, the One who is meek and lowly in heart. Oh Lord, as we see the present situation in the world and even our own condition, we mourn over the situation and are meek toward people! Be our meekness today! Be expressed through us as the meek One!
We believers in Christ want to not only be in the kingdom of God as a realm of the divine life, but even more, live under the heavenly rule of the kingdom, being in the reality of the kingdom of the heavens today so that we may be rewarded with the manifestation of the kingdom in the coming age.
This means that we read and pray over Matthew chapters five through seven, realising that the constitution of the kingdom of the heavens needs to be worked out and lived out in us for the sake of God’s kingdom.
We open to the Lord, we allow Him to empty us continually, and we seek to be poor in spirit and pure in heart. As we seek the kingdom with a single heart for the Lord, we see the situation around us, and we mourn over the situation and the people around us. Oh Lord!
Our Christian life is full of both rejoicing and mourning, for when we spend time with the Lord, we rejoice and are full of joy, but when we see our condition and the situation around us, we are mournful and full of prayer before God.
On the one hand, we look away unto Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, and we are filled with faith and hope, for He who has begun this good thing in us will also consummate it.
On the other hand, when we look at the situation around us and the people in the world today, we are full of mournfulness, praying over them with tears, for they reject God, do not obey Him, and don’t even want to know about Him.
When we look at our situation and see our shortcomings, our lack, and our mistakes and sins, we simply repent before the Lord and are mournful over our situation, opening to Him from deep within for His kingdom to come in us.
Such an inward attitude leads us to be the meek ones, those who are meek toward others.
Blessed are the Meek, for they shall inherit the Earth: Being the Meek Ones who do not Resist Opposition but Suffer it Willingly

Matthew 5:5 says, Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. This is a good verse to pray over, for it shatters our human concepts.
In the world today, those who fight and struggle will gain something, and those who are aggressive and take action will gain some possessions or some land.
Meekness and inheriting the earth seem not to go together in the world today, for people today need to be aggressive and fight for their land, otherwise they will lose it.
But this is not so in the spiritual realm; in God’s eyes, if we are going to possess more territories, we need to be meek.
What does it mean to be meek? Oh Lord, what does it mean for us to be meek? To be meek means not to resist the world’s opposition but suffer it willingly (Psa. 37:11; Eph. 4:2; Titus 3:2; James 3:13).
This is not what we see in the world around us today. If a country is meek, willing to suffer, others will invade it, take its land, and take advantage of it.
But it is not so in the kingdom of the heavens. Those who are meek, the meek ones, will eventually possess the earth.
This exposes our natural life because we are raised in this world today, where we are always seeking to gain something, invade someone’s space, and be aggressive. Oh Lord! We must learn to be meek, not to resist opposition but suffer it willingly.
We can do this only by the divine life in us. If we are poor in spirit and mourn over the pitiful situation of others, spontaneously, we will be meek.
First, our spirit needs to be unloaded and emptied out.
Nothing should preoccupy is except God and His interest; then, we are in a condition in which we can mourn over all people and circumstances that are not up to God’s standard or that meet His requirements.
And our attitude toward others is that we are meek; meekness comes out of being poor in spirit and having a mournful spirit toward the situation and people around us.
To have the virtue of meekness means that we do not invade others or fight with them; rather, we suffer opposition willingly.
Sometimes we are with some people and, as we do this and that, we simply invade their space; we may sit next to them, and we spread our legs so wide that they have very little space to be in, while we invade their space. Oh Lord!
It is not a small thing to sit or be where we are assigned and do things according to our measure, not assuming that we can take others’ space or possessions.
God has measured us a particular measure, and we should not go beyond it. This is true both in our Christian life and in our work for the Lord; we simply need to be the meek ones, those who do not invade others or fight with them.
The natural man likes to invade and be aggressive; the natural man is not meek. Instead of invading others’ space and encroaching on their territory, we should be willing to give in.
To be meek is to give in, not to fight, and not to invade others’ territory.
In Numbers 12:3, we are told that the man Moses was very meek, more than anyone else who was on the face of the earth.
He was in a situation where Miriam and Aaron, his older siblings, rose against him and said that God speaks through them also, not just through him.
Instead of responding to this and telling them off, standing on his authority, Moses was meek.
He had God’s calling to lead His people; he didn’t ask for this job but rather tried to run away from it, but God gave him this task.
Now his siblings rose against him, and Moses did not vindicate himself. But Jehovah got upset, and He disciplined both of them.
Moses did not try to protect his job or position; he let the others say whatever they wanted and he kept quiet, allowing Jehovah to speak. Oh Lord!
Many times, when we are evil spoken of, when we are criticised, we may try to speak up for ourselves and protect our position.
This causes others to react, and there are more reactions after that, and then even turmoils may arise. Oh, blessed are the meek! The meek will inherit the earth.
We do not have to fight for what we think we have or should have. When the Lord returns, He will regain the earth, and if we are the meek ones today, we will inherit the earth with Him. The Lord Jesus was meek to the very end.
He was meek to such an extent that He allowed others to arrest Him, wrongfully condemn Him to death, and put Him to death by crucifixion.
Even on the cross, He did not justify or vindicate Himself; rather, He was meek (Matt. 27:39-44). This One lives in us, and we as kingdom people should be the meek ones today.
Lord Jesus, thank You for being in us as our life, a life that is meek toward others! We open to You today. Oh, blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth! Oh Lord, we are not meek in ourselves and by ourselves, but You are the meek One in us. May we be poor in spirit today, those empty and unloaded to be filled afresh with You and Your thoughts, desires, and feelings. May we be those who are mourning over the situation today, being filled with Your feelings and prayers for the pitiful situation around us. Amen, Lord, may we spontaneously be meek, having the virtue of meekness. Hallelujah, those who are meek do not invade others nor do they fight with them. Amen, Lord, we turn from our natural man who wants to fight and invade others’ territory – we turn to our spirit! We do not want to fight for our rights. May we be the meek ones who do not resist the world’s opposition but suffer it willingly. Amen, Lord, the meek will inherit the earth!
While Being Meek toward other People, we fight against the Power of Darkness!

On the one hand, we are meek toward other people (Matt. 5:5); on the other hand, we fight against the power of darkness.
The natural man wants to fight, argue, take over others’ territory and things, and defend itself; the kingdom people, however, are meek towards others, being willing to suffer the opposition, and at the same time, they fight against the enemy.
Here we see a contrast: while we are being meek, giving in to all persecution, negative circumstances, and being evil spoken of, we are not ignorant of the enemy behind all this.
The enemy is not the people around us. The enemy is not the brothers and sisters who may persecute us for taking the Lord’s way.
The enemy is not our relatives or friends who may speak evil things or do evil things to us. The real enemy is the devil, who is behind all these activities.
We do not fight against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenlies (Eph. 6:12).
It seems that the people around us are persecuting us, and it seems that a certain group of people is targeting us or trying to cause us to suffer.
In reality, however, Satan is behind this, Satan with his kingdom of darkness.
While we yield to these people and to the environment, not fighting back against people, inwardly we stand one with God. We stand one with God’s will.
This is what the Lord Jesus did when He was put to death on the cross.
It seemed that the priests and the religious Jews hated Him and wanted Him dead, and the Roman politicians worked with them while the soldiers carried out this despicable task; in reality, it was Satan who was behind all this.
The Lord Jesus was there on the cross, hanging on the cross; He let these people do whatever they wanted to Him. They sneered at Him, laughed at Him, and slandered Him.
They even mocked Him, telling Him if He is the Son of God, He should come down from the cross. Yet the Lord remained there on the cross, silently; He was meek, He did not fight back, and He stood one with God’s will.
He obeyed God’s will for Him to go to the cross and He took God’s will, absolutely submitting Himself to the will of God.
This submission to God’s will is the strongest fighting against the enemy. Our fighting is with the evil spiritual powers, not with flesh and blood.
We simply stand one with the Lord, obeying God’s will, and yield to whatever God allows in our environment.
May we see that the enemy is not our spouse, our workmates, our boss, the opposers, or those who persecute us or speak evil things against us; the enemy is Satan and his angels, the evil powers in the air (2:2).
When we preach the gospel and are being opposed, it is not the people who oppose us, and we do not fight with people; rather, we are meek toward people and we fight against the enemy in the spiritual realm.
Although we fight Satan and the principalities in the air, we don’t fight people; we love people, we are meek toward them, and we want to dispense Christ into them.
If someone hits us on the right cheek, by the Lord’s life in us, we are meek and we turn the other cheek also. But inwardly, we pray, Lord, bind the powers of darkness!
Outwardly, we are meek toward our opposers, and inwardly, we fight against the enemy and his powers of darkness.
If we are meek, willing to suffer the worldțs opposition in this age, we will inherit the earth in the coming age (Heb. 2:5-8; Luke 19:17, 19; Matt. 11:28-30; Num. 12:3).
We are not here to inherit the earth now; we will inherit the earth when the Lord comes back, for when He returns, the kingdom of the world will become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ.
Now we want to be the kingdom people, the meek ones. Amen, may the Lord make us such ones!
Lord Jesus, make us the meek ones today. Make us the same as You are, those who are meek toward people. Amen, Lord, thank You for setting up a pattern of being meek as You went to the cross and were willing to be crucified for us. How we appreciate Your pattern. You are the meek One. You did not resist those who persecuted You and who put You on the cross. You did not answer back, nor did You get down from the cross to fight those who crucified You. Thank You for being the meek One in our spirit. We want to be one with You today to be those who are meek toward others today. Oh Lord, as we are meek toward other people, we fight against the power of darkness. We yield to You and to those around us in the circumstances You arrange and You allow. Yet we fight one with You, standing one with Your will on the earth. Amen, Lord, we do not fight against flesh and blood but against Satan and the evil powers in the heavenlies. We stand with You, Lord, to fight against Your enemy in the spiritual realm. We are meek toward others and we pray for You to bind the powers of darkness! Amen, Lord, may Your kingdom come and Your will be done!

Life-study of Matthew, pp. 168-169, by Witness Lee
Dear brother, it is the meek who inherit the earth, not those who fight and struggle.
To be meek is not just to be humble but even more, not to resist or oppose when we are attacked and opposed.
On one hand, we fight against the enemy, and on the other, we are meek toward people, for the enemy is not the people but Satan.
Ameeen!!!
The blessedness of being meek is that the meek shall inherit the coming subdued earth. Hebrews 2 reveals that it was not to angels that He subjected the coming inhabited earth but to those who are meek.
The way to take the earth is not by slogans, shouting, or fighting. This is the human way.
But the way of the kingdom of the heavens is to gain it by being meek. There is no need to fight, but there is a need to be meek. We do not fight against flesh and blood but against the devil, against the enemy of God. We must fight against the devil, God’s enemy, day and night. However, we are not to fight against people, not even against those who oppose us.
This meekness is not related to outward material things. Meekness is Christ. It is also related to something inward, to what we are in our very being. How we need Him to be the content, the essence of our very being.
In ourselves, we’re self-conceited and egoistic, filled with pride, fight for our right, unyielding and clamour for more.
It takes those who are poor in spirit, mourn for for the negative world without God’s reign to be meek. To have the virtue of meekness means that we do not invade others or fight with them. Instead, we are willing to give in. If we are meek and willing to suffer the world’s opposition in this age, we will inherit the earth in the coming age. (Heb.2:5-8; Lk 19:17,19). The Lord admonishes us to be meek and lowly. This is the way we take the earth!
However, whilst we’re meek to other people, we know that the enemy is not the people. It is Satan and his host! So, we do not compromise against Satan, the powers of darkness nor the evil angels in the air. Oh Lord, bind the powers of darkness!
If we are poor in spirit, pure in heart, we will also spontaneously be meek, not resisting or fighting back against the world’s opposition.
Against the devil, the enemy we must fight, even pray for his binding.
However, towards people we must be willing to yield, to turn the other cheek, as the Lord Jesus did not resist when He went to the cross.
Amen, being poor in spirit leads to mourning, mourning leads to being meek and it is the meek who will inherit the earth.
To be meek means to not fight or resist but suffer the world’s opposition in this age.
The way to take back the earth is through meekness.
May we be meek towards each other today not fighting but having love for each other and fight only against the real enemy, Satan
Footnotes from the Holy Bible, Recovery Version.
We must fight against Satan and the powers of darkness day & night — but never against people.
The way of the kingdom of the heavens is to be meek, not to fight or resist people, no matter how much they oppose us.
The economy of God is opposite to the economy of man.
Man’s way is to fight for what he wants. We fight by being gentle, humble and unwilling to fight or resist.
