If we are poor in spirit, surely we will mourn, for when we look at Christ, we’re happy and rejoicing, but when we look at ourselves and others around us, we have to mourn; when we’re poor in spirit, we mourn for others and pray for them, and we are meek toward them.
Lord Jesus, we come to You as we are. Make us poor in spirit. Have a way to empty us in our spirit from anything that is not You. Empty us and fill us with Yourself. Fill us with Your kingdom and Your life. Make us one with You in caring for others, even in praying in a mourning way over them. Oh Lord, make us the kingdom people You need today! Amen!
What a blessedness it is for us to be the kingdom people today who are mourning over the situation in the world so that the Lord would come in and establish His kingdom!
A saint who is poor in spirit and seeks God will mourn because of the surroundings, the present generation, and the people in the world simply don’t want God but rather, they resist God and rebel against God.
Wherever you turn, there’s rebellion against God, and everyone is for himself and his own things. Oh Lord!
As believers in Christ who are learning to live in the reality of the kingdom of the heavens, we often mourn. We don’t mourn over the tribulations that we suffer; we don’t mourn because of the sufferings we experience as we are disciplined and discipled by God.
The object of our mourning is God and His dominion. We want His kingdom to come and His will to be done.
But the Bible tells us that those who mourn are blessed, for they shall be comforted.
As we care for the Lord and His interest here on earth, we mourn over the people around us and all the situations, and we come to the Lord and to the meetings of the church.
Here, the Lord has a way to comfort us. He comforts us today as we gain God and we come under His rule.
As we meet with the saints and see that they are seeking God and learning to live the kingdom life, this is such comforting!
In the coming age, He will comfort us even further, for we will live in the manifestation of the kingdom of the heavens, and all the problems, sicknesses, and evils of this age will disappear!
For eternity, we will be fully comforted, for the Lord will lead us to waters of rest, He will wipe away any tear, and He Himself will be our portion for our enjoyment for eternity.
Thank the Lord for making us such a blessed people, those who mourn today but who will be comforted! Amen!
If we are Poor in Spirit, we will Mourn for Others and Pray for them and for God’s Interest

If we believers in Christ are poor in spirit, being emptied and vacant for the Lord to freshly fill us and saturate us, we will surely mourn (Matt. 5:3-4).
First, we are poor in spirit, and then we mourn. As we seek the Lord and His kingdom, desiring to gain more of God, we will care for what He cares and we will see things the way He sees them.
We will feel sad and sorrowful for the poor situation among God’s people today, and we will also feel mournful about our own situation.
If we look at the situation among Christians today, we will mourn, praying for others and for God’s interest. We mourn for the kingdom life, for not many live in the reality of the kingdom today.
We mourn concerning ourselves, the people we live among, and the general situation among Christians today (Luke 6:21).
On the one hand, we look at Christ and are filled with joy unspeakable and full of glory, rejoicing in the Lord.
On the other hand, we look at ourselves and those around us, and we simply mourn, even we are one with the Lord in mourning over the situation around us.
Thank the Lord, He is so wonderful, and He is always rich to all those who call on His name; when we touch Him and meet with the saints, it is really wonderful (Rom. 10:10-13).
But when we are one with the Lord in such a way and then see the situation around us, the situation among Christians, and even our own situation, we have to mourn.
If we do not mourn today, this means that we still live in our natural man, so we are easily content, even indifferent and complacent.
How much we need the Spirit’s sensitising so that we will not be easily satisfied with the present condition!
If we look at ourselves, we realise that we don’t live Christ that much, and we do not express the Lord in our daily living.
If we look at the saints, we realise that we are not that much built up, and the reality of the Body of Christ is still not fully present and practical among us (Eph. 4:16).
So we mourn over ourselves and over the situation in the church, being one with the Lord to pray for His interest on earth.
God desires to have such people; He wants to dwell with such people.
In Isaiah 66:1-2 He said that heaven is His throne and the earth is His footstool, but He desires to rest and be with those who are contrite in heart and who are trembling at His word.
God wants to dwell with such people. May we be those who are poor in spirit today, for we will mourn and be contrite in heart and poor in spirit, one with the Lord to pray over today’s situation.
First, we are poor in spirit and we have the kingdom of the heavens. Right after this blessing, the Lord said, Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
If our spirit is full and preoccupied, if we are still dwelling in the experiences of the past and we have no more room for the Lord, it will be difficult for us to mourn.
We will be very full and self-satisfied, having our old concepts and having no space for the Lord and His feelings.
But when we are emptied in our spirit, when we exercise our spirit to be emptied and vacant for the Lord, we will be in a position where we’re ready to mourn over the world situation, the people around us, and the people of God and the churches.
If we are poor in spirit, we will surely mourn.
On the one hand, we see a vision of God’s eternal economy, and we are filled with hope for what the Lord is doing in us and around us.
On the other hand, being poor in spirit, we mourn, even with weeping, for the situation around us and even in us is so sad. Oh Lord Jesus!
We will feel sad and sorrowful for the poor situation among God’s people and even for our own condition.
If we have God’s view, being emptied in our spirit to be filled with Him, His kingdom, and His view of things, we will see that the situation among God’s people today is really worthy of mourning. We will mourn concerning ourselves, our society, and today’s Christianity.
In our time with the Lord, we look to Him, we are infused with Him, and we’re happy and rejoicing. But when we look at ourselves and others around us, we will have to mourn.
This mourning is full of prayer and interceding, for we care for God’s interest, we are touched with what is in His heart, and we want His kingdom to come and to spread in us and around us.
May the Lord make us such ones today. May we truly open to Him in our daily living, allowing Him to break through in us and empty us continually so that we may continually be filled with Him and mourn for others, for the situation around us, and for God’s people, praying for them one with the Lord.
Lord Jesus, empty us again today! We open to You. We want to be emptied continually so that You may fill us continually. Make us poor in spirit. Empty our spirit of anything that is not You. We don’t want to keep anything old in our being; we want to be emptied, vacated, and have a lot of room in us for You and for Your kingdom. Oh Lord, as those poor in spirit, we mourn over the situation of those around us. What do You think, Lord Jesus, concerning the situation among God’s people today? Oh Lord, what about Your kingdom being expressed in a practical way in the church life? We open to You. We repent for not living Christ. We confess that we still express ourselves and we live Christ so little. Oh Lord, we yearn for Your kingdom to come and for Your will to be done. We mourn concerning ourselves, our society, and today’s Christianity. We love You, Lord, and we rejoice in You, but we also mourn one with You over what is happening today, praying for Your interest on the earth today!
The Poor in Spirit Mourn over the Pitiful Situation today and are Meek toward Others

The first three blessings in the constitution of the kingdom of the heavens are masterfully and skillfully placed in the right sequence by the King of the new kingdom of the heavens.
First, we need to be poor in spirit, being emptied continually in our spirit so that we may be filled continually with Christ in a new and fresh way.
Second, as we are filled with the Lord and His desires and intentions, we mourn over the pitiful situation today, and we are comforted by the Lord.
Third, as we mourn, we don’t expose others or criticise them; we are meek toward them. In a normal Christian life, being joyful and mourning go together.
When we look to the Lord, we are joyful because He is our hope. He is on the throne (Heb. 4:16) and we come forward with boldness to the throne of grace to enjoy Him and partake of Him.
He is the meaning of our life, and when we look away unto Jesus (12:2), we are joyful, we are strengthened, and we go on with Him.
But when we look at ourselves, when we look at our environment, we are full of mourning. We are both joyful before the Lord and mourning over the situation in us and around us.
We need to learn to mourn, not just by thinking about this or that thing that happened, but by first allowing our spirit to be emptied so that we are poor in spirit.
We need to come to the Lord, allow Him to empty our spirit, and genuinely open our heart to Him so that He may fill our being with Himself.
As we let the Lord shine into us concerning His people and the situation in the world, He will speak to us.
He will impress us with how much others oppose God, how much falsehood is among people today, and we will clearly see the corruption, unrighteousness, sins, persecutions, and rejection toward God and His people.
We will simply mourn over the pitiful situation in us and around us.
We may even shed tears before the Lord, for we realise that His righteousness is not lived out, His throne is rejected, and even we believers in Christ rebel against Him.
As we mourn before the Lord, we are not discouraged; we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed (2 Cor. 4:16).
We simply express the situation we see to the Lord. We may look at our spouse and we realise that, even though we love the Lord and enjoy Him, they do not do it; rather, their heart is not for the Lord and His interests.
We may be in the highest heaven but they may be in the lowest hell. And even our children, living in the same house with us, they may not love the Lord.
So we mourn for them, praying before the Lord concerning them and their situation.
We mourn over the deplorable condition of the world today, the condition in Christianity, and the lack of seeking after the Lord in people.
Wherever we turn around us, people care for their future, their business, money, possessions, fame, and glory, but no one seems to care for the Lord.
So we mourn over them, we mourn for the pitiful situation in us and around us, and we spontaneously are meek toward them (Matt. 5:5).
We will be meek toward others because we have a deep feeling within us about their pitiful situation.
We pray for them very much, we pray for their situation, and we pray in the way of mourning; then, when we contact them, we will be meek.
Many times when we contact others, however, even though we see their pitiful situation, we may condemn them and criticise them, or even demand things from them.
This shows we’re not poor in spirit and we do not mourn over them.
May we come to the Lord in this matter and have such an attitude of being poor in spirit, mourning over others, and being meek toward them for the reality of the kingdom of the heavens.
Lord Jesus, we come to You as we are; empty us and make us poor in spirit. We turn our heart to You and we open our whole being to Your filling. Shine on us, Lord, concerning our situation and the situation of those around us. Oh Lord, we care for You and for Your kingdom. Touch us with what touches You. Make us concerned for what You are concerned. Oh Lord, what about the falsehood, the corruption, the unrighteousness, and the sins around us! Oh Lord, what about our own not living Christ and not magnifying Christ in our daily living? We love You, Lord, and we care for what You care. We are one with You to mourn over the pitiful situation around us, the deplorable condition of the world today, and the degradation in Christianity! Oh Lord, as we mourn for others, praying for them before You and one with You, may we be meek toward them. May we be meek in their presence so that they may be gained for the Lord and many would be brought back to God!

- Hymns on this topic:
– Down in the human heart, / Crushed by the tempter, / Feelings lie buried that grace can restore; / Touched by a loving heart, / Wakened by kindness, / Chords that are broken will vibrate once more. / Rescue the perishing, / Duty demands it; / Strength for thy labor the Lord will provide; / Back to the narrow way, / Patiently win them; / Tell the poor wand’rer a Savior has died. (Hymns #921 stanzas 3-4)
– The essence of the Kingdom is / A life that’s under heaven’s rule, / A life whose nature is divine / With Christ experienced in full. / Such is this life: in spirit poor, / With heart repentant, mourning, meek, / Which is to others merciful / And purely God Himself doth seek. (Hymns #944 stanzas 1-2)
– Lord, make us pure in heart; / For we’ll be not content until / You all our being fill, / O Lord, renew our mind, emotion, will— / Lord Jesus, grow in us. / Yes, Lord, impress our heart / That we must take You in each day; / The seed will have its way; / Your growing brings the kingdom here to stay— / Lord Jesus, grow in us. (Hymns #1132 stanzas 6-7)

If we are poor in spirit, we will mourn over our situation, over the condition of those around us, and over the pitiful situation in the world today.
Because we are emptied of ourselves and filled with the Lord’s feelings and desires, we just mourn one with God and pray. Spontaneously, we are meek toward others.
Collected Works of Watchman Nee, The (Set 1) Vol. 19: Notes on Scriptural Messages (3), Chapter 5, by Watchman Nee
Amen brother. The outward situation today is truly worthy of our mourning & weeping.
We need to mourn concerning ourselves, our world, and today’s Christianity.
We can only mourn if we are first “poor in spirit.”
When we are poor in spirit, we will have the feeling to mourn over today’s pitiful situation and we will be meek/humble because we will have a keen awareness of our own pitiful condition.
The vision concerning God’s economy viewed against our own condition (where Christ is not lived out much even among us), our society (where the whole world lies in the evil one), and Christianity (with its formalities, substitutes & degradation) should turn us to mourn as those who are poor in spirit. Thus, we may have the capacity for the King to come in to establish His kingdom within our being, realising the pitiful world situation.
This should turn us spontaneously to be meek and pray for them in the way of mourning.
Yes brother, the prerequisite for mourning is to be poor in spirit.
To be poor in spirit means to prepare ourselves for receiving more light to see all situations inside and around us.
Without the person living in us we cannot mourn.
When we look at Christ, we are happy and rejoicing. When we are poor in spirit, seeing the vision of God’s economy, we will mourn over the situation and condition concerning ourselves, society and Christianity.
We will mourn for our children, relatives, colleagues and neighbours and would pray for them in the way of mourning, to contact them in the way of meekness.
We need to be first poor in spirit and then mourn. When we are poor in spirit we will surely see the vision of God’s economy which will open our eyes to the state of the world today.
Even for our families, wives children and neighbours we will recognise their condition and mourn. Because we mourn for others we can be meek towards them.
First we need to be poor in spirit so the Lord Jesus can set up His kingdom in us.
What is the function of a messenger? The answer is this: God gains a vessel and leads that vessel through a process of experience—of demolition, breaking, and disappointment—until He has completely severed him from the ground of reliance in the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. He overturns all his notions so that he no longer clings to what he once stubbornly insisted on.
Then there appears in such a person a remarkable softness, an openness and a willingness to be corrected and taught. This is what we mean by “an open vessel.” Formerly held ideas about God’s work, truth, and orthodoxy are all dealt with and shattered. Now there is an entirely new outlook, a new way of seeing things, not according to outward appearances but according to God’s revelation.
In this sense, the vessel itself is the ministry. Ministry is not repeating doctrines one has previously received from other messengers. God first crushes us, and then rebuilds us on a new spiritual principle, the manifestation of that rebuilding is ministry. From that point on, what you speak is no longer mere doctrines. It issues from what God has wrought in you—His work in you over many years, a work that continues to this day.
Amen dear brother, when we look at Christ we are happy and rejoicing but when we look at ourselves and others around us, we have to mourn.
It is under Christ’s heavenly ruling we can be poor in spirit and then our mourning is one with God and His interests for others!
