If God in Christ is everything we need, why some Christians are still unhappy or joyless?

This is a very good question. As believers in Christ, we know from the Bible that when we repented and believed in the Lord, Christ became our allotted portion with the saints in the light (Col. 1:12), and God gave Christ to us as the fattened calf (Luke 15) for us to enjoy.

We were redeemed, we were returned to our rightful possession – God is our inheritance – and we returned to God as our everything. God is our inheritance, and after we were saved, the Spirit of God is in us as the pledge, the guarantee, the proof, and the security of our inheritance (Eph. 1:13-14).

The Holy Spirit is today in us, the believers in Christ, as a foretaste, a sample – guaranteeing us the full taste of our enjoyment in God in the future!

We are saved – we have God – we have everything we need – God is our inheritance! Still, there is this question which both unbelievers and Christians ask alike,

If God in Christ is everything to us, why some Christians are still unhappy or joyless?

Everything is ours in Christ – the entire Triune God has been “installed” into our being as an “electrical installation”, and we have all we need. To enjoy all these things, to enjoy the Triune God as our portion daily, all we need to do is TURN ON THE SWITCH!

Just like the lights in a building – they are not happy, rather, they are useless, unless someone flips on the switch; so are we, the believers in Christ, not happy unless we turn on the switch!

Even though we have God, and He is the meaning of our human life, we daily need to turn on the switch by exercising our spirit to enjoy God as our portion!

The Father is continually waiting for the prodigal son to return and does not take into consideration his “speech” – He gives us Christ as the fattened calf, puts a feast before us, gives us Christ as the best robe, and puts a ring on our finger and sandals on our feet!

No one is unworthy – rather, all those who come to God through faith are worthy because God says, “I have accepted you!

Today we are in the age of the jubilee – we have been released from any captivity(including the captivity of self and sin) and we have been returned to God as our rightful possession!

When we believed into the Lord Jesus, we started enjoying God; now our whole life is a life of continually and increasingly enjoying God in Christ as the Spirit for our possession!

In the age of the jubilee, the Lord is richer and richer unto us – and we can exercise our spirit to simply enjoy Him! This is the answer to that question! It is simply,

We are joyful and happy when we turn to our spirit and enjoy Christ as our portion continually!

Lord, save us from being unhappy Christians! Keep us TURNING away from anything or anyone else – away unto You! We want to look away unto Jesus that we may enjoy You as our portion! O, Lord, right now we want to turn on the switch – by turning to our spirit! Thank You for preparing everything for us – Christ is our feast, Christ is all we need! We can have a foretaste today of what the full enjoyment of God in the eternity will be! Lord, You are richer and richer to us every day! You are nearer and dearer as we enjoy You and turn to You! We love You, Lord!

I really enjoyed your prayer here. This morning I was realizing how easy it is for me to turn away from the Lord, even after I have some time to enjoy Him. Its like that switch has a spring on it that defaults in the off position. But now I'm encouraged to flip the switch on again and call on the name of Christ, my portion!

Yes, brother, there are so many other things that distract us from the Lord – even right after our time with Him! But at any point in time and at any time during the day, when we remember or when we're reminded, we can TURN ON the switch! We can turn to Him in our spirit – and let Him live in us!

Yes, it's also true to me to easily turn away from my blended spirit, even after I have experienced Christ richly a little time ago. O Lord Jesus! O Lord Jesus! Let's go back into Christ our portion!

Hey Stefan, thanks for the post. While learning a worship song by Kari Jobe (Healer) the line "I believe You're my portion" really got me. So I was looking up "if God is our portion" and found your blog. This is great. Thank you. Love your writing. Keep posting! It's encouraging! DCA

Thank you, DCA 🙂 Please go ahead and read the other articles on the website. Our God is our portion of enjoyment – and He wants to be everything to us for our enjoyment! Why be unhappy or joyless when we can TURN right now to the Lord? Even as believers in Christ, we need to continually Turn To the Lord in Our Spirit by calling on His name – oooooo, Loooooord Jeeeesuuuus… – and we are filled with His life! Oh, what a joy unspeakable and full of glory!
