God Committed His Son to us to Call on Him and be in the Name of Jesus, one with Him

And whatever you do in word or in deed, [do] all things in the name of the Lord Jesus... Col. 3:17

It is amazing to realize that God has committed His Son to us – we have the name of Jesus, we can be in the name of Jesus, and we can ask in the name of Jesus!

Doing all things in the name of the Lord Jesus actually means in the Lord Himself, for the name denotes the person; He has committed us His name and we can be in His person to do all things in Him. Wow, hallelujah!

There is a very deep thought here related to the matter of being in the Lord’s name.

It is not simply that we need to do something and say, I do this in the name of Jesus; it is not the mere mentioning of the name of the Lord when saying something that causes us to be in His name.

We need to realize that both in our experience and from the Scriptures we have begun a relationship with the name of Jesus from the time of our baptism.

We called on the name of the Lord initially to receive Him as our life and person, but at the time of our baptism, we have been put into Christ by calling on His name.

Acts 2:38 speaks of being baptized upon the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit.

The name of the Lord Jesus is connected with the Spirit and with the baptism.

We need to not only repent and be baptized but specifically, we need to be baptized upon the name of Jesus.

And our baptism is in the name of the Father, the Son and the Spirit (Matt. 28:19), and in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, the reality and sphere of our baptism.

To be baptized into the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit or into the name of the Lord Jesus is to be baptized into a spiritual union with the all-inclusive Christ, who is the embodiment of the Triune God.

But to be baptized upon the name of Jesus Christ is to be baptized upon the ground of what the name of Jesus Christ stands for.

This name stands for the person of Jesus Christ, including all that He has, all He has done, all He has accomplished; all this constitutes our belief, the faith of God’s New Testament economy.

On this ground we believers in Christ are baptized.

Our relationship with the name of Jesus begins from our baptism, for God’s intention is that we would be baptized into the name of Jesus and upon the name of Jesus Christ.

Our baptism is not a formality; when we are baptized upon the name of Jesus Christ, we are organically joined to Him.

The name denotes the person.

Hallelujah, the name of Jesus is the highest name in the universe, for God highly exalted Him in His ascension and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name!

In the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow and every tongue will openly confess that He is the Lord.

Today we take the lead to be one with the Lord in enthroning Him and calling on His name, for when we call, we get the person of that name!

God Committed His Son to us to Call on His name and be in the Name of Jesus, being One with Him!

Being in the name of the Lord Jesus is for God to commit His Son to us… To be in the name of the Lord Jesus…means that the Lord is bold enough to commit His name to our hand, and He is allowing us to use this name. The Lord trusts us to the extent that He dares to commit His name to our hands and allow us to use this name. This is the meaning of being in the name of the Lord Jesus. Being in the name of the Lord means that the Lord Jesus has given Himself to us and that He is willing to acknowledge everything that we do in His name. He is willing to bear all the consequences of us doing things in His name. Collected Works of Watchman Nee, vol. 22, “The Prayer Ministry of the Church,” pp. 179-181“In the name of the Lord Jesus” in Col. 3:17 actually means “in the Lord Himself,” for the name denotes the person.

To do all things in the name of Jesus is to be in the person of the Lord, to be one with Him.

Being in the name of the Lord Jesus means that God has committed His Son to us, that we partake of His name, and that the Lord has given himself to us and is willing to acknowledge everything that we do in His name (1 Cor. 1:30; John 3:16; 14:12; 2 Cor. 12:2; Col. 3:17).

In John 14:13-14 the Lord said that, whatever we ask in His name, he will do, for if we ask God anything in His name, He will do it.

Again and again, He said that we need to ask in His name, and it will be done for us. We have received a name that is above every name, the name of Jesus.

And we now need to call on His name and use His name.

The name of Jesus has been put in our hands by God; we can use this name.

We can be in the name of Jesus, that is, we can be one with Him, for when we call on His name, we are joined to Him, to His very person.

It is amazing to realize that we believers in Christ have received the name of Jesus Christ from God, and we can partake of this name, we can ask God everything in this name, and God will do it. Wow!

The fact that we are in the name of the Lord Jesus to us means that God has committed His Son to us.

He didn’t commit us to do a work – He has committed His Son to us.

We can even say that He is risking that we would ask anything in the name of Jesus, and He will do it.

He trusts us to the extent that He dares to commit His name into our hands and allow us to use this name.

The Lord Jesus has given Himself to us, and He is willing to acknowledge everything that we do in His name.

This means that our living and service need to be backed up by the Father, for we are in the name of Jesus.

The Lord Jesus lived a life in the name of the Father and did everything in the Father, with the Father, and one with the Father.

He didn’t speak His own words, He didn’t do His own work, and He didn’t seek His own glory; He did everything one with the Father.

Everything that the Lord Jesus did and said, the Father acknowledged and agreed with it.

We have this One living in us.

He in us is one with the Father all the time, and when we call on His name and are in the name of Jesus, we are one with Him.

We have been brought into an organic union with the Lord.

Day by day in our living we need to be one with the Lord so that when we speak, He speaks, and when we do a work, He does the work.

God’s intention for a normal Christian life and a genuine church life is that we would be in the name of Jesus, that is, be in the person of the Lord, fully one with Him to express Him.

When we speak, He speaks, and when He speaks, we speak.

He dwells in us and we dwell in Him, He is one with us and we are one with Him.

When we are one with Him to such an extent, we are in the name of Jesus, and we do all things in His name, in the organic union with the Lord.

Then, whatever we ask from the Lord, He will do it, for we ask in His name.

Because we are so one with Him, He is willing to bear all the consequences of us doing things in His name.

Thank You, Lord, for committing the name of Jesus to us! Hallelujah, God has committed His Son to us that we may be in the name of Jesus and ask in the name of Jesus! Amen, Lord, make us one with you today. Make us those who are in the name of Jesus, fully one with the Lord. Hallelujah, we are one with the Lord in spirit, for in spirit we’re joined to Him as one spirit. We open to You, dear Lord. Live in us today. Keep us one spirit with You. Be expressed through us. We want to be in the name of Jesus all day long, doing all things in the organic union with the Lord. May we be one with the Lord even as Christ was one with the Father, doing all things in the Father’s name and for the Father’s glory! Amen, Lord, gain this in us!

To be in the Lord’s Name is to Live by the Lord and to let the Lord Live in us as we are One with Him

And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it. John 14:13-14As believers in Christ, it is vital for us to see that we are in the name of Jesus, that is, we are one with Him, for we are in Him and He is in us (Rom. 8:10; 2 Cor. 13:5; Gal. 3:27-28; Col. 1:27).

What a mystery, what a miracle, and yet how real this is!

God has committed His Son to us – He committed the name of Jesus to us to such an extent that we can use this name.

In Acts 3 we see how Peter and John went to the time of prayer, and there was there someone asking for alms; he was crippled and begged for money.

Peter and John said to him, I do not have alms but what I have I give to you: in the name of Jesus Christ, rise up and walk!

Peter didn’t start praying, asking the Lord if He wants to heal this man, seeking to know the Lord’s leading if he should heal this man, etc; he simply used the name of Jesus.

Similarly, in Acts 16 we see another case, when Paul was in Philippi and was preaching the gospel, a young girl who was possessed by a demon was following him and disturbing him.

So Paul could not take it anymore and said, I charge you in the name of the Lord Jesus, Come out of her! And the evil spirit came out of her.

The name of Jesus has authority.

Paul didn’t first fellowship with the other brothers to see what he should do; he simply used the name of Jesus.

On the negative side, the sons of Sceva in Acts 19 tried to use the name of Jesus to cast out a demon, but they were defeated, for they were not one with the Lord.

We should never use the name of the Lord Jesus in a superstitious way; at the same time, we should not say that we are not worthy, so we can’t use this name.

We need to be in the name of the Lord Jesus, that is, be one with Him.

We are in Him, He is in us, and we need to be one with Him.

Paul was so one with the Lord that the name of Jesus was his reality, and he used the name of Jesus.

If we remain in the organic union with the Lord, simply being one with Him, we will allow God to be manifested in us.

When we’re one with the Lord, no matter how limiting and confining the outward situations are, we will magnify Him.

May the Lord show us what it means to be in His name and what it is to do everything in His name!

To be in the name of the Lord is to be in His person, even in Himself; it is to be in the sphere and element of all that the Lord is (Rom. 8:2; 1 Cor. 1:30).

To be in the name of the Lord is to live by the Lord and to let the Lord live in us (Gal. 2:20).

Abide in Me and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither [can] you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine; you are the branches. He who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing. John 15:4-5May we realize that our self has been crucified with Christ and now we are in the Lord, in the name of the Lord, living in the organic union with Him.

When we are in the name of the Lord Jesus, we are in Christ, Christ is in us, and we are one with Christ (Col. 1:27; 3:1, 3; John 15:4-5).

We abide in Him as branches in the vine, and He abides in us as the vine in the branches.

Then, whatever we ask for, He will do it, for we ask in the name of Jesus.

On one hand, we need to call on the name of the Lord, breathing Him in and partaking of His riches.

On the other hand, we need to realize that to be in the name of the Lord Jesus means that we need to live by the Lord and let the Lord live in us.

The name of Jesus denotes His very person, and to be in the name of the Lord is to be one with Him as the person.

Being in the name of Jesus or doing things in the name of Jesus is not merely something like a signature, stamp, or seal used as an endorsement to conclude a prayer.

It is a reality of us being one with the Lord and living by the Lord, even letting the Lord live in us. May the Lord gain this reality among us and in us today.

Lord Jesus, we want to be in the name of the Lord Jesus in all things today. We want to do all things in the name of the Lord Jesus. Keep us contacting You in our spirit, no matter what happens. Keep us abiding in You so that You may abide in us. Oh Lord, make us one with You in reality. May we live by the Lord and let the Lord live in us today so that we may be in the name of the Lord Jesus. May our daily life with all the daily things be in the name of the Lord Jesus. Keep us in union with You day by day. Keep us in our mingled spirit. Keep us in spirit as we take care of our daily affairs. May we live one spirit with You today!

The first time the Lord Jesus mentioned being in His name was in John 14—16…He said, “Whatever you ask in My name, that I will do… If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it” (14:13-14). All the way from chapters 14 through 16, He repeatedly told the disciples to ask “in My name.” This shows us not only that He would one day receive a name above every name but also that the disciples could use this name. It is also a name you and I can use. This name is the name God gave to His Son Jesus, which has, in turn, been put in our hands…You and I and everyone else can now use this name…Not only is there His name, but there is also such a thing as being in His name. The name of Jesus Christ is the name He received before God, and being in the name of Jesus Christ is for God’s children to partake of this name. Hence, being in the name of the Lord Jesus is to partake of His name. It means that we can use this name. Brothers and sisters, we have to realize that this is the greatest thing committed to us from God and the Lord Jesus.

According to the basic truth revealed in John 14 and 15, to be in the Lord’s name means to be one with the Lord, to live by the Lord, and to let the Lord live in us. The Lord came in the name of the Father and did things in the Father’s name (5:43; 10:25). This means that He was one with the Father (v. 30) and lived by the Father (6:57), and the Father worked in Him (14:10). In the Gospels, the Lord as the expression of the Father did things in the Father’s name. In the Acts, the disciples as the expression of the Lord did even greater things (John 14:12) in His name. Therefore, to be in the Lord’s name means to be one with Him in actuality. All these verses indicate that, according to biblical usage, to be in a person’s name means to be one with that person. Thus, the name is not merely a signature, stamp, or seal used as an endorsement to conclude a prayer.
