Learning to Depend on the Lord by having a Life of Continual Fellowship with Him

Trust in Jehovah with all your heart, / And do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, / And He will make your paths straight. Prov. 3:5-6

As believers in Christ, we are not and cannot be independent – we constantly depend on the Lord, and we should consult God related to every problem that we encounter.

The entire Bible shows us that in this universe there is a divine romance, a romance between God and man.

God fell in love with man; He made man in His image and according to His likeness, and He wants that man would become the same as God in life and nature so that God and man, man and God, would live together as a married couple for eternity. Hallelujah!

In the most holy and proper sense, the Bible shows us a romance between God – the Husband – and man – the wife.

God has chosen a group of people in the Old Testament, the people of Israel, and He wooed them, courted them, and got them engaged to Himself in the wilderness; the law given on Mount Sinai was an engagement contract.

God didn’t give them the law so that they would keep it; He gave them the law to tell them who He is and what He can be to them, and what He wants them to be by Him doing all these things in them.

In the New Testament, God has chosen a group of people, the church composed of the believers in Christ; they are engaged to God through the ministry of the apostles, and when they read the Bible with a prayerful spirit, the fall in love with the Lord even more.

Paul betrothed the believers through his writings; the more we read the Bible, the more we pray and open to the Lord in His Word, the more He woos us, He courts us, and He draws us to Himself.

We all can testify that the Lord is so sweet, so real, and so available to us in His word. As those who are engaged to the Lord, we yearn for His return, and day by day we learn to live one with Him.

We depend on the Lord, we don’t do things without the Lord, and we are looking forward to seeing the Lord and marry Him.

As the Lord’s wife, we should not leave our Husband; rather, we should rely on the Lord, trust in Him, and be one with Him.

Especially when the enemy comes to tempt us, we need to realize that we are not smarter than him nor are we stronger than him.

No matter how much spiritual victory we have, no matter how advanced we are in the Lord, and no matter how mature we are in the Lord, we still need to continually depend on the Lord and consult with Him again and again.

The day that we don’t depend on the Lord is a day of defeat, for in ourselves we are easy prey to the enemy.

As those who love God, we need to Depend on the Lord and Consult God in All Things

Blessed is the man who trusts in Jehovah / And whose trust Jehovah is. And he will be like a tree transplanted beside water, / Which sends out its roots by a stream, / And will not be afraid when heat comes; / For its leaves remain flourishing, / And it will not be anxious in the year of drought / And will not cease to bear fruit. Jer. 17:7-8As believers in Christ who love the Lord and aspire to be the constituents of His overcoming bride, we need to realize that in all things we should depend on the Lord and therefore should consult God related to every problem that we encounter.

This sounds so simple and so sweet, and we do agree with it, but it is the first thing that goes “out the window” when a problem or a temptation comes.

We love the Lord, we desire to be His overcomers, and we want to be part of His overcoming bride, so we should depend on the Lord and consult Him in everything.

We need to bring every matter to the Lord, and we need to consider, examine, and determine things before Him and in fellowship with Him.

Many times our experience is that we just react to things; something happens and we simply react to it, and long after the situation passes we realize what was our reaction and response.

Many times we even forget to pray; we forget to take some time to come into the Lord’s presence, wait on Him, and depend on the Lord in our decision and our response.

In our presumptuousness, with our good intentions, we trust in what we have received and experienced in the past, so we make a judgement call, and we may even make a promise. Oh, Lord!

This is the same situation or the same response that the children of Israel had when the Gibeonites came to them and deceitfully told them a story concerning who they are and where do they come from.

We cannot criticise the people of Israel, for we are very much the same. Many times we forget that we are married to Christ; we forget that we are not the Husband but the wife, so we should depend on the Lord in all things.

In the aspect of being the Lord’s wife, we need to be weak; every believer needs to be weak in this respect, even weak to the extent that he doesn’t have his own ideas and doesn’t make his own decisions but depends on the Lord in everything.

We need to realize that, as the wife of Christ, we are not the Head; we are not the Husband, we cannot and should not make decisions on our own, and we should not do anything without contacting the Lord and consulting with Him.

Rather, we should come to the Lord, depend on the Lord, and consult with God in all things; we need to make decisions in the Lord’s presence, even allow Him to make the decisions.

And He has said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness. Most gladly therefore I will rather boast in my weaknesses that the power of Christ might tabernacle over me. Therefore I am well pleased in weaknesses, in insults, in necessities, in persecutions and distresses, on behalf of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am powerful. 2 Cor. 12:9-10When we depend on the Lord and check with Him concerning all things, when we enquire of Him and seek His counsel, we have a sweet living in our Christian life.

In both small and big things, in things we think we know the answer to and things that are difficult, in all things we need to consult the Lord, depending on Him.

Many times, however, our experience is that we do not consult the Lord but rather, we go ahead and make decisions, we react to things, and based on our previous experience, we just do things.

The more we go on with the Lord, the more we grow in life, and the more we enter into the fellowship of the Body, the more we realize how dependent we are; we depend on the Lord and we depend on our fellowship with Him and with the Body.

It is such a sweet Christian living when we come to the Lord, again and again, realizing that we need Him, and consult with God, enquire of Him, wait in His presence, and allow Him to decide!

We need to fellowship with the Lord in all things; especially in small things, we need the Lord’s counsel, His word, and His guidance.

When we touch the Lord in this way in everything, we let Him make decisions, we have a sweet Christian life.

Lord Jesus, we love You and we aspire to be the constituents of Your overcoming bride. We come to You, again and again, dear Lord, to consult You in all things. We depend on You. We do not want to live apart from You; we do not want to live apart from our constant fellowship with You. Save us from trusting in ourselves or relying on our own understanding. Show us how weak we are before the enemy, and cause us to realize how much we need You in everything. May we be those who give up our own ideas and do not make our own decisions but rather, we come to You, contact You, consult with God, and allow You to make all the decisions. Oh Lord, cause us to have such a sweet living of a Christian in Your presence today, depending on You for all things!

Learning to Depend on the Lord by having a Life of Continual Fellowship with Him

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses every man's understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Phil. 4:6-7A normal Christian life is a life of fellowship – we cannot be separated from God and from other members of the Body, so we fellowship with the Lord and with the saints.

Before we were saved, we may have been very independent and strong, capable, and able to do so many things.

But after we were saved, we became dependent on the Lord by having a life of continual fellowship with Him. We used to have our own point of view, our method of doing things, and our opinions and decisions.

Now, as believers in Christ, we learn to fellowship with the Lord and depend on Him in everything.

From the day we became Christian, we realized that we are not the head – Christ is the Head, and we are His members; He is the Husband, and we are His wife.

The normal life of a Christian is learning to depend on the Lord by having a life of continual fellowship with Him.

In all the things related to our daily life and church life, in the things related to our work, our family, our daily living, and our church life, we feel that we need to consult the Lord.

Actually, as believers in Christ we have no alternative but to fellowship with God in all things; we have no other choice but to discuss all things with Him and allow Him to handle things and speak to us in all things.

As we learn to depend on the Lord, we allow Him to touch certain things and make decisions for us; we do all things in the organic union with Him.

It is so glorious for a Christian to be dependent on God at every moment and in every matter (see Phil. 4:6-7; Prov. 3:5-6; Jer. 17:7-8; 2 Cor. 1:8-9; Psa. 62:8; Psa. 102:7)!

This needs to be our experience every day, taking the Lord as our Husband, fellowshipping with Him, discussing all things with Him, and allowing Him to speak to us, touch us, and even make decisions for us.

Because He is our beloved Bridegroom, He is responsible for everything, whether large or small; all things are in His hands, and He does the speaking and makes the decisions.

If God leads you to walk a way that you know, it will not benefit you as much as if He would lead you to take the way that you do not know. This forces you to have hundreds and thousands of conversations with Him, resulting in a journey that is an everlasting memorial between you and Him. The Collected Works of Watchman Nee Vol. 07: The Christian, ch. 23As He leads us by His smile in our intimate fellowship with Him, as we have hundreds and thousands of conversations with the Lord, we have a journey with Him, something that is a memorial for eternity between us and Him.

This is so sweet, so deep, and so glorious, even lasting for eternity! In our fallen being, as descendants of Adam, we are strong and independent; however, when we contact the Lord and have fellowship with Him, we cannot but depend on the Lord and open all things to Him in prayer.

In the world, it is shameful to be referred to as being a person who depends on others, but in the spiritual realm it is a glory to depend on the Lord.

In the world today it is shameful to be referred to as a dependent person; they say that people should be self-supporting and independent, capable of doing all things by themselves.

But for us Christians, it is glorious to be dependent on the Lord! In our personal conversations with the Lord, in our thousands of prayers and talks with Him, we become more and more dependent on Him.

When Israel did not seek the counsel of her Husband, she became an independent and individualistic wife; the result is that, as seen in Joshua 9, she was deceived by the enemy.

She had no protection and no safeguard, for she left her Husband and didn’t seek His counsel. Oh, Lord!

May we realize that, as the Lord’s wife, we should co-live with Him, always relying on Him and being one with Him all the time. It is good to open concerning this to the Lord and ask Him,

Lord Jesus, make us persons who depend on You all the time. We want to learn to depend on the Lord in all things. Save us from being independent from You. Save us from trying to solve things on our own. Save us from speaking from ourselves and doing the things we think are good. Oh Lord, we want to come to You to discuss all things with You and allow You to handle all things. Speak to us as we open to You and speak with You. Be the One in us who makes every decision. We choose NOT to be independent from You but to depend on the Lord in all things by living a life of continual fellowship with the Lord. Amen, Lord, we treasure our hundreds and thousands of conversations with You, for we know that our journey with You is an everlasting memorial between us and You! We love You, our dear Lord Jesus, our dear Husband!
